The Motability Scheme works by allowing you to use your weekly mobility allowance to pay for the lease on a brand new car. This means that to be eligible you need to receive one of the following payments:

Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance (HRMC DLA);
Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of the Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP);
War Pensioner’s Mobility Supplement (WPMS); and
Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP).

Dedicated Motability specialists

Whichever payment you receive there must be at least 12 months remaining. If you have a child aged three or over who receives one of these benefits, then you are entitled to use the money to lease a car which you can drive on their behalf.

We have dedicated Motability specialists who can answer any questions you may have about your eligibility for the Scheme and you can arrange a meeting online or by phoning us directly.

Motability FAQs

This is a mobility allowance provided by Veterans UK and it can be used to pay for the lease on a Motability vehicle. The War Pensioners’ Motability Supplement is currently £64.15 per week.

When you order a vehicle from FRF Motors through the Motability Scheme, we can arrange any adaptations you need to be carried out. There is a wide range of modifications available to make your motoring experience easier and more enjoyable, and many of these are available at no extra charge.

Not all adaptations are available on every model and our Motability experts can advise you on the best cars to choose for the modifications you require

Our dedicated specialists are on hand to make sure you make the right choices to suit your unique needs.

Deciding which car is right for you from among our wide range of Vauxhall, Alfa Romeo, Peugeot, DS and Mazda models can seem overwhelming to begin with. There are many things to consider before making a decision, including cabin space, boot space and which adaptations are available. We know there is a lot to take in, so a dedicated Motability adviser will guide you through the process and help you choose the best option for your specific requirements.

You will first need to think about what kind of journeys you plan to take and whether you will need the car to accommodate a wheelchair or scooter on a regular basis. You should decide which adaptations you are likely to need at this stage too, as not all modifications are possible with every model. There is also a range of models with differing levels of performance and fuel efficiency, along with various exterior and interior designs.

Through the Motability Scheme, you swap your weekly mobility allowance for a brand new car. Your lease payments cover all of the costs associated with running a car, including comprehensive vehicle insurance, Vehicle Excise Duty, roadside assistance and routine servicing and maintenance.

This worry-free Contract Hire lease package is covered by your mobility allowance, and with some cheaper models you may have some money left over each week. More expensive models may require you to pay an advance payment which is non-refundable. This covers some of the cost of the car to ensure the weekly mobility allowance payments can pay the balance in three years.

You can no longer get a car through Hire Purchase on the Motability Scheme – instead we are focusing on the all-inclusive Contract Hire lease package detailed above. If you would like more information about leasing and paying for a Motability car, please contact the team in Swansea or Bridgend.

Financial help with the Motability Scheme

With the Motability Scheme, you only have to pay what you can reasonably afford towards a car that is ideally suited to your needs, including adaptations. Your Motability adviser will help you find the best-value option that meets your requirements, and if your mobility allowance covers this or you are able to pay for it yourself then financial help will not be given.

However, if the vehicle you need is beyond your means then there is financial help available. You will have to complete an application form and provide any necessary supporting documentation. Your personal circumstances will be considered so that financial help is given to the people who need it the most.

It is important to remember that financial help is only given at the point of ordering your Motability vehicle. You cannot claim financial help for the car or any adaptations after you take delivery of your new Motability vehicle.

This is a mobility allowance provided by the Department for Work and Pensions which can be used to pay for the lease on a Motability car. The Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance is currently £57.45 per week. The government is in the process of replacing this with the Personal Independence Payment for people aged between 16 and 64.

The Department for Work and Pensions decided who receives the Higher Rate Mobility Component so you should contact them with any queries.

It can be received from a person’s third birthday, and you can apply before that date so that the award starts from when the disabled child turns three. If a child under the age of three has had their mobility allowance confirmed you can apply for the Motability Scheme up to three months before their third birthday, but the agreement cannot start until the allowance is received.

No, in order to join the Motability Scheme you will need to extend or renew your allowance through the Department for Work and Pensions.

There is no limit on how many Motability users can live in one household, as long as each applicant meets the eligibility criteria. The number of non-Motability users in the household also has no effect on your eligibility for the Motability Scheme.

You can exchange all or part of the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance, the Personal Independence Payment, the War Pensioner’s Mobility Supplement or the Armed Forces Independence Payment. No other allowance can be used through the Motability Scheme.
